Questions worth answering?

Here are a few questions that I believe might be of some value for every church planter to ponder and hopefully answer prior to beginning the glorious but arduous task of pioneering a new church. Those pastoring existing churches that might be frustrated with their members’ unwillingness to take God’s calling seriously might also benefit from considering these questions:

1. Does God’s Word give us a glimpse of where the future history of mankind is headed?

2. Is it possible that Rev 5:9 and 7:9 give us a partial picture of what a portion of mankind will be doing in the future?

3. Based on what the God of the bible has revealed about Himself at previous points in the past: )see Gen 12:3, 26:3, 28:14, Psalm 86:8-10, 96:3, 2 Chron 6:32, Isa 42:1-7, 49:5,6, Luke 2:10,14, Matt 8:11-13, 28:18-20, and Acts 1:8, along with dozens of other verses), should we be surprised by what is described in Rev. 5:9 and 7:9?

4. Would we be wrong to conclude that bringing Rev 5:9 and 7:9 into reality might be one of God’s priorities?

5. Is it possible it should be one of our priorities too?

6. Did Jesus ever intentionally challenge His naturally SELF-focused followers to view things from the perspective of the bigger work that God is going to do? (Luke 10:2 John 4:35)

7. Does it take any effort on the part of a church leader to convince the members of his church to be concerned about themselves or the people in their inner circle of family and friends?

8. At what point did Jesus introduce His first followers to the idea that their following Him, their relationship with Him was for God’s larger purposes and interests, not their own? (Matt 4:19)

9. Did Paul see any value in helping a local church to understand that what he was called to and what God has done in and for them is a part of something larger that He is doing globally? (Rom 1:5 Col 1:6)

Based on the questions and the probable answers to these questions, what priority should God’s global purposes and one of His “end game” plans have in the vision and actual ministry of a local church from it’s inception forward?

Leave Only Footprints

I grew up hiking in the backwoods of South Lake Tahoe.  One of the first rules I learned about hiking was “To leave only footprints.”  The second rule grew from the first, “Leave the the campsite better than you found it.”  You may be thinking, “Okay, great.  What does this have to do with church anything?”

A few weeks ago I, or we the church, had to send of a very involved family away.  This family has been a HUGE blessing to me through the restarting journey.  They brought a depth of spirituality and service that was lacking early on.  Loosing families are painful, but some are more painful than others.  This was a painful one that came with joy.  Nothing bad happened, God moves people in and out through a variety of circumstances.  My time with this family was up and they moved on to another city to open a new chapter in their lives.

On their last Sunday, I brought them to the front of the church to love on them through having people share about how God used them in their lives and to pray for them as we sent them out to their new home and church.  In my comments I said to them, “I hope I left you better than I found you.  You know, like camping.”  It got a good chuckle, but they assured me that I had.  In this moment I learned a valuable lesson.

Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed,  shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;  nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.  And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. (1 Peter 5:1-4, NASB)

“…for the keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account.” (Hebrews 13:17b, NASB)

People that we shepherd come and go throughout our ministries–it is inevitable.  When a person shows up at church, or calls you on the phone, or zaps you an email, you don’t know how much time God will give you to shepherd them.  He may give you days or years you never know how long you have with that person.  But from the above passages, it is a sober reminder that we as shepherds will give an account for the impact we had on the lives of those we shepherd.  I want people to leave their encounter with me walking closer to God than before we met.

The more I consider this post, I realize this is more of a prayer to be prayed.  There are times when managing my own life and family seems daunting, let alone being responsible for so many others that God has entrusted to my care.  My prayer is that God would enable me, and those who shepherd a flock of people, to shepherd the flock in a way that leaves them walking closer to Him–whether we have one contact or many alongside them.

 

John Calvin On Pastors

These are some of John Calvin’s comments from 1 Timothy 5:13: “And besides they learn [to be] idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not.”

“For none are more exposed to slanders and insults than godly teachers. This comes not only from the difficulty of their duties, which are so great that sometimes they sink under them, or stagger or halt or take a false step, so that wicked men find many occasions of finding fault with them; but added to that, even when they do all their duties correctly and commit not even the smallest error, they never avoid a thousand criticisms. It is indeed a trick of Satan to estrange men from their ministers so as gradually to bring their teaching into contempt. In this way not only is wrong done to innocent people whose reputation is undeservedly injured, but the authority of God’s holy teaching is diminished.”

“The more sincerely any pastor strives to further Christ’s kingdom, the more he is loaded with spite, the more fierce do the attacks upon him become. And not only so, but as soon as any charge is made against ministers of the Word, it is believed as surely and firmly as if it had been already proved. This happens not only because a higher standard of integrity is required from them, but because Satan makes most people, in fact nearly everyone, over credulous so that without investigation, they eagerly condemn their pastors whose good name they ought to be defending.”

Christians and Combat

***Written a few days after the killing of Bin Laden***

Ten years ago today I was an active duty Navy SEAL deployed to the Middle East, today I am the Senior Pastor of Valley Baptist Church contemplating the death of Osama Bin Laden. Every now and again I have these moments where my two worlds sort of collide. Today is one of them. The Internet is a furry with news, Facebook status updates, and blogs all reporting on this historical event. The chatter has inspired me to blog on a topic that is near and dear to my heart–The Christian and Combat.

First, let me begin by stating that I am writing this on my own behalf. My views are my own and do not necessarily reflect any group that I represent. These are my thoughts in progress and I do not claim to be an expert…although, I probably could. 🙂

Second, I have had many discussions with Christian pacifists over the years. I love the majority of them dearly. They are my brothers and sisters in Christ and we just don’t agree on this one issue. Some have accused me of not being able to see the Scriptures clearly because my background distorts my ability to listen to the Bible’s teaching. I admit that this really bothers me. They are simply wrong and assume my inclination is to hold a “pro war/violence position” because of my military background. In all honesty, the opposite is true. I have had to draw my gun on people (although I have never actually had to kill someone) and I have lost a number of very close friends in battle and have seen the after affects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to take a pacifist position on this subject, but the Scriptures will not allow me to do that (in my humble opinion). Violence of any sort is horrible and I long for the day when God scraps this world and starts a new, but for now I am here living in a sinful fallen world faced with horrible things where there is no simple answer.

“The Christian and Combat” was the title of my Master of Divinity thesis. As a former Navy SEAL who is now a pastor and law enforcement chaplain, I feel I need to get to work and convert it into a user friendly format for publication as I am often asked for my thoughts on this subject. One of these days, one of these days…

My first combat mission was on September 9, 1999–my 25th birthday. At this point in my life, I had spent the last seven years preparing for this moment and had been a Christian for about 3 years. It was dark, pitch black dark, in the Northern Arabian Gulf off the coast of Iraq, my adrenaline was flowing, and I distinctly remember thinking, “Gunnar, how did you get yourself into this one?” I know the feeling that many soldiers and cops experience…my prayer is that I can help those who protect us answer these deep theological questions prior to finding themselves in combat.

There is no way for me to blog about this in its entirety–I need to write that book. But I will attempt to answer a couple of questions: 1) the need for warriors, 2) the authority of the warrior, and 3) the Christians response to violence.

The need for warriors. There is a story in the Old Testament that inspired the writing of my thesis and it is found in 1 Samuel 23:1-5. David and his mighty men are on the run from Saul when David gets word that the Philistines are plundering the people of Keilah. My first point against the pacifist argument is evil is happening all around us. You can be a totally passive person (which I feel like I am) and find yourself witnessing one person or group that is violently attacking another. I love what Dietrich Bonhoeffer says about this reality, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” David and his men were exposed to an evil situation, their initial reaction was not to respond because they weren’t in the best position to help. David asked God a second time if this is what he was to do. God’s desire was for David to proceed onward using violence to stop this evil that was already in progress. Today is no different. Evil is everywhere. Men and women everywhere are doing evil to all sorts of people. Are Christians simply not to intervene? I don’t think so.

The authority of the warrior–military, cop, or individual. The clearest teaching anywhere in the Bible on this subject is found in Romans 12:9-13:4. This passage is pretty intriguing to me this week as it is very similar the Sermon on the Mount which I am preaching on through the month of May. Romans 12:9-17 has all of the verses that pacifists love to quote like: “Bless those who persecute you”, “Never pay back evil for evil”, etc, etc. Yes, I believe this all applies to the Christian and I take these verses literally, but a literal interpretation forces one to look at the whole context–one cannot study Scripture in isolation of the whole.

Romans 12:18-19 begins to shed some light on how we as Christians are able to do this. First, the Bible says we are to be at peace with other people if it is possible and as much as it depends on our own actions. Then it says, “leave room for the wrath of God.” Okay so this is very interesting. We are not to take our own vengeance because God’s wrath is more effective than our own wrath (okay, the text doesn’t say why, that is my opinion). In my Bible I have drawn from “wrath of God” in Romans 12:19 down to Romans 13:4 where the thought carries through. Here the Bible essentially says that “it” (i.e. the authorities or government) “does not bear the sword for nothing” and that it is a “minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.”

I have met a number of pacifists that I respect. Concerning these verses in Romans 13 they would agree that the government is responsible to bear the sword, but would say based on Romans 12 that there is no place for the follower of Christ to function in this capacity of authority as the one bearing the sword. Biblically speaking, the wrath of the government is the wrath of God (for the record, I am not defending all government actions, time does not allow me to unpack this, but I do think God judges nations Isaiah 34-35 this will be in the book). So to say that the Christian cannot function in this capacity is in essence to say that they Christian is holier than God and this responsibility should be left the the unregenerate.

Every soldier and cop must understand the concept of being under authority. There was one such soldier who encountered Jesus in Capernaum who understood this concept and expressed it to Jesus (Luke 7:1-10). Jesus’ response to this man was, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.” This is a pretty incredible statement if you stop and consider it for a moment. The point is that when life is taken it must be under the proper authority of God and the government and right circumstances–whether you are a soldier, cop, or individual defending yourself or others.

The Christian’s response to violence. Yesterday I started preaching through Luke’s account of the Sermon on the Mount (Luke 6:20-49). One verse stuck out to me (v.21), “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.” Am I happy that Osama Bin Laden is dead? Yes and no. Yes because a man who promotes evil and destruction to many people is gone. “Relief” is probably a better word than “happy.” Many of us in the West are not fully aware of the evil this man inflicted in the world. He killed many innocent people brutally. I am sad for what he represented because another will arise in due time…there are many already doing evil to the innocent even as you read this. He is dead, but many died along the way. One peer of mine calculated that some 62 SEALs have died fighting the war against terrorism. I know a few widows and children who are left behind…Osama Bin Laden’s death doesn’t undo this or the attacks that have been committed during his lifetime. But there is pleasure in knowing that the government is following through with God’s command to bring “wrath on the one who practices evil” (Rom. 13:4).

There is so much more I could write on regarding this subject, but I am running out of steam and I would like to post this tonight. Regardless of your theological bent regarding pacifism, I think we all agree on Paul’s instructions to Timothy, “First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

We should be on our knees this day praying as Paul tells us to above. I am thankful for the sacrifice of soldiers, cops, and good Samaritans who put their lives at risk in the calling of restraining evil.

“The baptism with the Spirit was not optional for the apostles nor should it be for us.  Jesus had commissioned them to go into all the world with the gospel, but commanded them to wait in Jerusalem until they were endued with power from heaven.  Jesus saw this as absolutely essential to fulfilling their calling.  And I believe it is essential for us in the twenty-first century as well.  The Lord wants to empower us for ministry.”[3]Brian Brodersen

Discerning whether or not Jesus has called you to church planting is essential if you’re thinking about becoming a church planter.  There is more to have than a clear sense of calling though before you step out into the adventure of church planting.  The mission of church planting is a spiritual offensive on the kingdom of darkness.  You come against powers beyond yourself on the mission field.  That reality makes it necessary for the church planter to access a power beyond himself that is even greater than that of the kingdom of darkness if he wants to survive the mission.  He needs the very power of God through the reception of the baptism with the Holy Spirit (or Spirit-filling if you like).  Only then will he even be able to begin to be truly effective in the mission of Jesus.

 

The Personal War

Jesus conveyed this message to me in a very interesting way shortly after I arrived with my family in Utah to plant Refuge Church.  Early on in the life of the church I began to experience intense opposition.  I went through a season where I dealt with a lot of physical affliction.  I came down with swine flu, shingles, successive intense and unusual chest colds, culminating with an episode of stomach flu which left me puking my guts out all day, every day, for a week.

The physical pressure I was under at that time gave way to spiritual pressure.  As things intensified bit-by-bit the enemy began to tempt me to doubt God’s call and favor on our lives as we endeavored to start a new church in enemy territory.  I was getting really frustrated and insecure in some ways.  In the heat of all this, the Lord gave me what I now know was my first truly prophetic dream.   In the dream my wife Jen and I came to a large open field that was over-run with people participating in demonic worship.  They were dancing in worship in an absolutely chaotic frenzy.  There was an intense sense of darkness in the atmosphere around us.  It was freaky!

As the dream shifted gears, suddenly Jen and I were standing before a fence overlooking the field where we had before witnessed the satanic gathering.  Now it was broad daylight and we could see the narrow cliffs lining both sides of the field stretching far out into the horizon.  Jen and I were passionately praying over the field.  We were crying out to God to take that land from the power and kingdom of darkness and possess it for the kingdom of Jesus Christ.  We prayed for Him to use us as He took the enemy’s territory for Jesus!

And then it came.  As we prayed a giant and seriously intimidating red horse emerged from the field.  The horse came charging out of the field through an open gate a few yards from where we were praying.  I braced myself as the horse reared up to trample me down and kill me.  Then perhaps the craziest thing happened; As the beast lifted up to stomp me, I grabbed it’s front legs and twisted them until the horse was forced to the ground in submission.  After it was defeated the horse vanished and we were safe.  At that moment I woke up feeling really spiritually affected as I’m sure you can imagine.

As I prayed over the vision during the next few days the Holy Spirit granted the interpretation of the dream to us.  He reminded us that the picture of a field is often symbolic in the Bible of places in the world where He intends to bring His Kingdom.[4]  He showed me that in my dream the field represented Utah, the place He had called us to be some of the instruments through which He would bring His Kingdom.  In the dream He was confirming to us that as we work and pray for the coming of the kingdom of Christ in Utah, we would experience opposition that was too great for us to overcome on our own.  The opposition we would face as we served Jesus in Utah was represented by the horse coming out of the field to stop us as we prayed.  The ending of the dream in which I twisted the horse’s arms until it was forced into submission was a word of encouragement.  It was a declaration that even though the opposition would be great, we would ultimately overcome it through a power greater than our own, the power of God the Holy Spirit!  Even in the dream I was amazed that I was overpowering this fierce animal, and knew that something had to be working with me to accomplish this.  It was the power of God.

Where the Power’s at

The word of God given to the prophet Zechariah summarizes what the Lord was telling me through that dream in regard to what would make us successful as we fought on the front lines in spiritual battle as church planters.  Our ability to be successful and push back the gates of hell in Utah would come, “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of hosts.”[5]

We’ve made relying on the leading and power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish the mission of Jesus through Refuge Church our relentless pursuit from the first moments we sensed Jesus was calling us to plant.  The Lord was reminding us through this dream to continue on in that mindset as we served Him in Utah.  As we’ve sought to obey Him in this we’ve seen the Holy Spirit continue to move through our local assembly of believers in powerful and undeniable ways.  It’s so exciting to watch the Spirit of God work through the people of God, for the glory of the Son of God, Jesus Christ!

 

The Need

Jesus spoke of the need for His missionaries to access the power of the Holy Spirit for their mission as much as anyone else did in the New Testament.  Consider a couple texts and their implications for the call to missionary church planting:

 

“And being assembled together with them He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, ‘Which,’ He said, ‘you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now…you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.’”[6]

 

These verses describe the last interaction that Jesus had with the apostles before He ascended into heaven.  This is what He wanted to leave fresh in their minds as He was sending them out into the world to continue the ministry He had started during His time on earth.  They were about to go preaching the gospel, discipling believers, healing the hurting, and church planting as the kingdom came on earth.  They were to start in Jerusalem and not stop until Jesus had a witness in every nation, even to the ends of the earth.  But they were to attempt none of this until they received the empowerment of the Holy Spirit!  Without the Holy Spirit leading and empowering every aspect of their missionary lives they would be absolutely helpless to successfully accomplish the work to which Jesus had called them.

Luke records the concern Jesus had that his men understand their need for Holy Spirit empowerment at the end of the gospel He wrote as well:

“Then He said to them, ‘Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.  And you are witnesses of these things.  Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”[7]

The importance of experiencing the empowerment of the Holy Spirit for the work of church planting is clearly something that Jesus wants us to thoroughly understand.  If we think that we can be clever enough, cool enough, strong enough, strategic enough, or inspiring enough to bring people from spiritual death to life and beat back the gates of hell, we are at best naïve, biblically uniformed, prideful, and far from the heart of Jesus.  The work of God requires the power of God.  It is that simple.

As we venture out to the front lines where the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light meet in battle, which is exactly what we do when we enter into the work of church planting, we must consciously, prayerfully, dependently, and daily receive and rely on the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to make our mission fruitful.  If you don’t believe that, or aren’t prepared to walk in the power of the Spirit by God’s grace, DON’T PLANT A CHURCH!

Horses Vs Tanks

          I once heard a story of a cavalry unit that charged into battle against an armored tank division.  The cavalry unit was the last resort of defense for a country not as advanced militaristically as their invaders.  I’m sure it goes without saying that the cavalry unit was utterly destroyed!  Why? They didn’t have the adequate fire-power or equipment to even come close to overpowering the enemy they faced.  I would submit to you based on the words of Jesus Christ that if we try to be victorious in church planting over the opposition we face in the demonic realm without relying on the power of the Holy Spirit, we are a billion times more foolish, and will be far more fruitless than that cavalry unit ended up being as they challenged that armored tank division.  In the words of brilliant theologian, captain Kirk: “We just-don’t-have-the power![8]

Ten days after Jesus ascended back into heaven from where He came, the disciples did in fact experience the promised empowerment of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.  As they prayed in the upper room the Holy Spirit came upon them in power.  He manifested His power through them first by enabling them to worship God in languages unknown to them,[9] and later through the powerful preaching[10] of the gospel through which 3,000 people became born again.[11]  Since that time, all followers of the biblical Jesus have access to the empowerment and various gifts of the Holy Spirit[12] which He distributes according to His will as we seek and desire them.[13]

Summary and Exhortation

As believers, pastors, elders, and church planters, the empowerment of the Holy Spirit is an absolute must in our lives!  If you’re not seeking the power, don’t attempt the work.  If you want to experience the daily empowering of the Holy Spirit all you need to do is continually meet with Jesus in the word of God,[14] pray over the mission you’ve received from Jesus,[15] and ask to receive a fresh work of the Spirit in your life from the Father. [16]  It’s a gift.  We don’t have to beg for it; just receive it.  May we not have dead words!  May we have powerful biblical messages to share as we preach the Bible to the church and the gospel to the world because we depend upon the power of the Holy Spirit alone for our success, just like Jesus[17] and Paul did![18]

Tinkering with the “worship” portion of our Worship Service

The reality of loving, leading, and pastoring a local church requires regular trips into what can some times be best described as a “wrestling ring” without end.  For myself and most of the other pastors I know, wrestling with one or more issues regarding the way we are “doing” church is fairly normal.  In fact, one of the things I’ve especially appreciated about this blog is the willingness of some of the contributors to be incredibly honest and transparent about the things they are wrestling with now or what they’ve learned from the wrestling matches they’ve had in the past with various issues.

As I reflect on the myriad of ministry related wrestling matches I’ve had in my own mind and heart over the past 25 years, some of what I’ve wrestled with has had to with the content and format/structure of our Sunday morning and/or Mid-week services.

What I’ve noticed is this:   It’s always easy but not always healthy to fall into a comfortable, repetitive pattern in our “worship services”.  I’ve learned that it’s healthy for me and for my some of my key leaders to regularly ask questions about everything we do, including the way we “do” our services.  These are some of the questions that I like to challenge myself and other key leaders with in this area:

–What are the existing components of each of our church services? (For example: the welcome, opening prayer, bulletin/information segment, worship in song, offering, message, and so forth).

–Why do we place those components in the order that we do?

–Why do we feel those components are important enough to be a part of the service?

–Is it time to modify, drop, or replace some of those components with other components?

–If so, what other components should be added and why?

What I’ve learned from my own experience and from others is that the format/structure of each church service is usually the result of the convictions held primarily by the senior pastor, even though he usually seeks input from other key leaders.  Understandably, the convictions the senior pastor holds have been influenced by his previous experiences in the services of the church he was launched out from along with what he has been exposed to in the other churches he had been a part of previously.

Although there are some minor differences from one church to another regarding what components make up the format/structure of the service and the order those components take place in, the majority of church services are fairly similar. Realistically, and rightfully so, the format/structure and components of a church service should be culturally relevant and will some times reflect certain aspects of the culture, (like musical style), the church exists in the midst of.

With all of the above as the backdrop, I’d like to share two things I’ve wrestled with for many years regarding the worship in song component of our Sunday morning service in particular and two changes God has called us to make within the last year.

FIRST:

If myself or almost all other pastors I know were told that our church services could only contain two components, I believe most of us would say that one component should be worship in song and the other should be the message–the teaching or preaching of God’s Word.  Those two are the “biggies”, the “pillars”, the “bedrock” that everything else rests upon.  I certainly believe this way.

But, which of the two of those should be the highest priority?  It’s clear from the way most church services are structured that the message–the teaching or preaching of God’s Word is what is THE highest priority.  Because of that conviction, the worship in song component of the service is many times relegated to what is basically an introduction or a time of preparation for what really matters–God’s Word!

In this way of thinking, the corporate worship in song by the body isn’t viewed as being a worthy end in itself, its true value is in it’s ability to prepare God’s people’s hearts to receive God’s Word.  I’ve actually heard a few pastors make a statement like “let’s prepare our hearts for God’s Word now by worshiping Him in song”.

That  perspective was even passed on to me personally my first few years walking with the Lord.  Older and more mature pastors and church members always encouraged me to pray and worship the Lord in song before getting into His Word so that my heart and mind would be prepared for what He would speak to me.  I tried what they said and sure enough, it did seem to do just that for me.  So far so good.

But then, the wheels of that perspective started coming off.  The wobbling of the wheels started one Sunday morning when God grabbed my heart through the message and all I wanted to do in response was to worship Him in song as soon as the message ended.  When the worship team began leading the one final/closing song, I joyfully sang out His praises through that song like never before and corporately all of us in that service magnified His name from all that was within us.  It really did seem like everything else was in the shadows.  And then that one song ended.  And everybody began to exit.  And I came crashing down.

Frustrated, I knew as I went home that morning that God had planted a seed about worship in song that I dare not ignore investigating and cultivating.

Being the inherent rebel that I am, I decided to experiment with my personal time with the Lord the next day.  Oh I did pray when I began and I did worship the Lord in song before getting into His Word.  But I only worshiped with one song and then I plunged into His Word….and He made His Word jump off the page and into my mind, heart, and life that morning, like never before.

I was so overwhelmed by His presence and His truth and it’s appropriateness for my life that I could do nothing else but magnify Him in song!  I didn’t have any songs pre-thought out, but His Spirit brought to my mind the perfect song for what He had shown me about Himself and as I finished singing that song to Him, He brought another song to my mind that expressed a different aspect of what He had shown me from His Word.  And before I knew it I had spent 30 minutes gushing out His praises through the various worship songs I had in my memory.  It was like the Holy Spirit was at the keyboard of my heart accessing the database of songs that were in my mental hard drive.  He brought up the perfect song for the specific truth He had driven home to me in my time in the Word.  Everything had changed.  I knew that much.

I also knew that I had to discover if what I had experienced at church that previous Sunday morning and what happened in my personal devotional time with the Lord that morning was in line with what He has revealed in the bible.  I leaped head-long into the Word to see what He Himself had revealed about worship.  For the first time really, I was able to see numerous instructions and examples of what I have come to call “prescribed” worship.  Which is basically where God tells His people how and when to worship Him.

But I also discovered what I now call “spontaneous” worship.  For example, Abraham’s servant in Gen 24:25 and 24:50 erupts in worship AFTER prayer and then seeing God move in response to His prayer.  In Ex. 4:30, AFTER hearing that God spoke and what He had to say, the people bowed their heads and worshiped.  Worship is expressed by men of God in response to perceiving God doing something or reminding them of something in  Judges 7:14 and Job 1:20.  Although these and the many other text that reveal spontaneous worship don’t tell us the words used in worship were in song form, I believe that putting whatever words are spoken as worship into song form would certainly be acceptable to God and satisfying to the worshiper.

To make a long story short, after quite a few years and much time wrestling with what God had shown me, I decided last year to move forward with changing the format of our Sunday morning service.  Before doing so, I took our little body through a fairly in-depth study of what worship is and the two main expressions of worship that are found in scripture:  spontaneous and prescribed.

We then began doing our service using these components in this order:

1.  Welcome and opening prayer.

2. Ten to fifteen verses of a text from the bible that is linked to the text I will teach from.

3. ONE worship song

4.Five to ten minutes of having everyone greet one another, (crucial for a multi-ethnic church, but also good for any church in America in my humble opinion).

5-Upcoming events and offering

6-Message

7-At least 20 minutes, (3 to 5 worship songs) of worship in song.

Because I teach verse by verse the worship leader knows where I’ll be in the text and it’s amazing how God guides him to select songs that express the key points I bring up from the text.  And many times, they are points that I had NOT prepared for in my notes, but the Spirit had revealed to the worship leader as he put the song list together.

SECOND:

The extreme individualism that permeates our culture has influenced our corporate worship in song.  One indicator of how far we’ve gone on the individualism is the fact that we don’t have a separate word or phrase for the concept of a plural “you”.  In most other languages there is a word for “you” singular and “you” plural.  People from the south have a remnant of this idea when they say “y’all”.  But English as it is spoken currently by Americans reveals the individualism that dominates our culture.

Although we do come to Jesus individually, the moment of our new birth we become a member of the body of Christ.  Because of our individualistic culture, we view every “you” in the scripture as directed to us personally, when in many cases the text actually uses the plural “you” that we don’t have a word for.

In my own little battle for trying to correct some of our American cultural traits that have been accepted as Kingdom culture, I’ve begun waging war on many of our familiar worship songs.  We now intentionally change the nouns and pronouns from singular to plural.  We no longer sing “Open the eyes of my heart Lord….I want to see you”  We now sing it as “Open the eyes of OUR hearts Lord, open the eyes of OUR hearts, WE want to see you”.  We leave the hymns alone, but unless pluralizing the songs tweaks the wording too much, we now pluralize all of the contemporary worship songs we do.

Our members have had nothing but praise and thanks for our making this change.  But it has been VERY challenging for our worship leaders who have sung those songs hundreds of times with “I” “me” and “my”, to begin singing them this new way.  They agree though, the challenge is worth it.

And finally, because of the visitors who have been exposed to the more traditional Sunday morning format and worship song selection, we now include in the “welcome” portion at the front end of the service what they are about to experience and why.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Called to Plant

Called to Plant

“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain…”[1] – Jesus

 

“If there is one characteristic that is absolutely essential for effective ministry, it’s that we must first have a sense of calling—the conviction in our hearts that God has chosen and called us to serve Him.”[2]Chuck Smith

The work of church planting must begin with the calling of a man of God.  Church planting isn’t merely something you wake up one day and choose as a new career move.  At least this is not God’s desire for church planters.  The call to church planting is the call to apostolic missionary work.  With that said, we will begin by considering what the call of God will look like in the life of a man who is truly called to the work of church planting in the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom.


OUR CALL MUST BE OBJECTIVE

The first thing that should be noted on the subject of calling is that the call of God on a man has an objective side to it.  Paul speaks of some qualities of a called man that can objectively be evaluated in two of the Pastoral Epistles.[8]  Let’s consider the objective qualifications of a man called to lead in Jesus’ church from First Timothy 3:1-7:

 “(1) This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. (2) A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; (3) not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; (4) one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence (5) For if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); (6) not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the Devil. (7) Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the Devil.” 

 Paul tells us that the call to lead in Jesus’ church begins with desire in verse one.  There must be a driving inward conviction and desire to serve as an overseer of Christ’s people.  And yet, a strong desire is not enough.  Paul goes on to give his readers a list which provides objective standards by which we can assess ourselves and other men when determining if we are the kind of man Jesus calls to plant or lead His churches.  This means that though a desire to plant is necessary to consider yourself called to plant churches, this desire by itself is insufficient to determine whether you have truly been called by Jesus for that mission.  You must meet the other qualifications of a called man given in the text.

The General Reality of Your Life

Now, if you’re anything like me you read that list and think, “Who do you think I am? Jesus?”  We all know that it would be impossible to completely live up to every qualification Paul lays out for us in this passage at every moment of every day.  The point is that these things must be the general reality in the life of a man who is genuinely called by Jesus to lead in His church.  We will stumble and fall as all men do.[10]  However, the general portrait and continual pursuit of our lives will reflect the qualities listed above if we are called to lead in the church of Christ.

One Necessary Gift

One particular qualification should be singled out for a minute before we move on.  The qualification of being, “able to teach,” is what separates overseers in Christ’s church from deacons, whose qualifications Paul goes on to list in this same chapter in First Timothy.  The other qualifications primarily have to do with personal character and the treatment of others.  The ability to teach has to do with spiritual gifting.  It is the spiritual gift of teaching that a man must have to be any kind of elder/overseer in Christ’s church.  That would include functioning as a church planter.  It is implied that one who would serve as a pastor or church planting pastor needs to go through a season of being observed and assessed as they take opportunities in which they can test and demonstrate their ability to teach the word of God effectively.  This is the only way to confirm whether or not a man is gifted to teach; they must be given chances to teach, and the fruit must be evaluated.

If the gift of teaching isn’t confirmed in him, than in spite of a man’s desire to plant or pastor, and regardless of his integrity, he cannot possibly be called to church planting.  This doesn’t mean he is worthless; it simply means he must have a different role to play in the body of Christ.

This also doesn’t mean that he has to be the best Bible teacher in the world.  Sometimes we act as though men should be discouraged from pursuing the obvious call of God on their life just because they aren’t as good of a Bible teacher as Greg Laurie, John Piper, Mark Driscoll, or Chuck Smith.  This is stupid, to put it bluntly!  Every Bible teacher has weaknesses whether we recognize it or not.  The important thing is that the prospective planter is capable of communicating the word accurately, growing in their gift, and that the people of God are maturing spiritually under their ministry.[11]  Drawing on an analogy from baseball, I once heard Mark Driscoll say in regard to evaluating a man’s gift of teaching that a guy doesn’t need to hit it out of the park every time, but they do need to hit singles and doubles pretty regularly.  I think that’s a good idea of what it means to be able to teach.


OUR CALL MUST BE SUBJECTIVE

In addition to the objective call of God on a would-be church planter, I believe there must also be a timely and accompanying subjective call given by the Holy Spirit.  Prior to listing the character traits and gifting a man must have before being a leader in the church, Paul said, “If any man desires the office of an overseer it is a good work he desires to do.”[12]  Paul moves from desire to qualifications, not the other way around.  Again, this is because a man may have the character and even gifting needed to be a leader in the church, and yet not be called.  His character and gifting must accompany an intense desire for the work!

Men Without Heart

Huge amounts of damage has been done to Christ’s people because men who had good character and gifting took leadership roles in the body of Christ for which they had no heart desire to fulfill.  The ministry to the called is a necessity, not merely an option.  A called man will have a passion for the work the Holy Spirit is leading him into.  If you don’t have a Holy Spirit given passion for church planting you will never be able to obey the command given through Peter to Christ’s leading men: “Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly, not as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.”[13]

Two important applications can be made from Peter’s instruction.  First, if you are a strong Christian man who is aware that you generally have good character and also the gift of teaching which is required for elders, you need to make sure you still don’t take on the task of functioning as an elder or lead church planter UNLESS YOU ALSO HAVE THE DESIRE!  You will only end up hurting yourself, your family, and the church if you don’t have a Holy Spirit implanted intense desire for the work.  The ministry isn’t to be something you do by compulsion.  You will hinder what Jesus is doing in the church, not help it.  So please don’t feel the need to pull your bootstraps up and proverbially take one for the team by merely being a warm body in a needed area of service.  You will only deal a deadly blow to the team!

Secondly, those in leadership who want to be instrumental in training elders and church planters need to continually fight the temptation to empower good and gifted men who lack personal desire for the work.  Gifted men with good character and no desire for ministry will be unproductive, unmotivated sources of huge frustration for you.  You will hurt them, Christ’s people, and the mission by putting them into a place of leadership for which God hasn’t given them a burden.  Keep waiting on the Lord and He will raise up the right leaders with the right character, gifting, and desires in His own time.[14]  Jesus will equip, mold, and inspire the men He calls from the inside out.[15]

 

OUR CALL AND THE AFFIRMATION OF SPIRIT-LED LEADERSHIP

When Jesus is calling a man into the war of church planting, another way He will confirm His call is by speaking His will clearly through the Holy Spirit to the leaders in the prospective planter’s life.  Ample biblical texts demonstrate this principle.  Saul (Paul) and Barnabas’ call to church planting was confirmed when the Holy Spirit spoke prophetically through another leader as they were gathered together in a time of worship and prayer before God.[16]

Paul wrote reminding Timothy of a time when a prophecy given by the Holy Spirit regarding his call to pastoral and church planting ministry was spoken over him by the elders in his life.[17]  Jogging Timothy’s memory about that charismatic moment was intended by Paul to reignite confidence in his heart in regard to his calling, enabling him to continue on when the mission had become almost unbearably difficult for him.  The memory of Timothy’s Spirit-led leaders confirming his call would serve to encourage the young pastor and church planter to persevere being confident of the Lord’s will for him based on that moment.

Later on in his ministry Paul would command both Timothy and Titus to take on the role of being the lone men who would evaluate multiple potential church leaders for placement in leadership roles over the new church plants they’d established.[18]  They were to make the decision about whether or not to utilize these prospective leaders on their own with just the leading of God and the foundation of what they’d learned already serving with Paul as the basis for their decisions. Clearly Paul believed that as men already proven to be God-called missionaries, the Lord would use them to confirm the same call in other men’s lives.  Paul specifically instructed Timothy on two separate occasions to view the role of identifying, training, teaching, and mobilizing other men for leadership in the church as something he was to take very seriously as a pastor.[19]

Again, this all serves to demonstrate that God delights to make His call on future elders and church planters clear through giving confirming insight through those already successfully serving as elders and church planters.  A man’s call to church leadership and church planting will be confirmed by the Lord through the encouragement of Spirit-led men already serving in those roles.

 

Personal Story

When I was 22 I began serving as the worship pastor of an Evangelical Free church in West Point, Utah.  Early on in my time with this ministry, the pastor who is a great friend to me to this day asked if I would share the Word a little bit before we observed the Lord’s Supper together as a church one Sunday morning.  After service that day my pastor told me that he had discovered my gift; he said I had a gift for teaching.  He was basing that off of the ability I demonstrated to read a text, pick out the points, and apply the truth to the church in regard to the Lord’s Supper.

From that day forward he began to ask me periodically when I was going to preach a sermon.  I would usually respond by saying, “never!”  I didn’t think that I could teach the Bible.  I was scared to get in front of people and talk.  I’d never taken a public speaking class.  I was in choir in public school for four years and only attended one performance because I was so scared to get in front of people that I couldn’t even do it as part of a large group!  But my pastor had seen a gift in me that I couldn’t.  Ultimately Jesus continued to give me a burden for ministry and for teaching the Word, and later took me down the adventurous path of church planting.  But my journey down this path began with the affirmation of Spirit-led leaders in my life who had journeyed this way before me who saw the clear calling God had on my life as they watched me assist them in ministry.  It will be the same in the life of every man called of God to plant churches.  You’re leaders will see your call, and affirm your call.

 

OUR CALL AND THE AFFIRMATION OF THE LOCAL CHURCH

If a man is called, not only will Spirit-led leaders be able to identify and confirm the call, but so will the wider body of Christ with which the man is locally associated.  This is why Paul told Timothy to give himself to fulfilling His function as pastor/teacher in such a way that his progress would, “be evident to all.”[20]  When a man is Spirit-gifted for what he is doing it will be obvious not only to those he is assisting, but also to those he is leading.   Paul knew that, and he also knew it would encourage Timothy to see people affirming his growth in what Jesus had obviously designed him to do.  That is why he told him to persevere and grow in his gifts. He knew that as people saw his growth and received from God through him that they would be able to affirm his calling.

In the book of Acts we see the apostles looking to the affirmation of the local church to confirm the call of God on the lives of certain men to help take care of local churches.  This is the case in Acts six where we find the appointment of seven men by the apostles to take care of some physical needs in the church in Jerusalem.[21]  This is also clear in Acts sixteen where Paul pays attention to Timothy’s reputation with the body of disciples in his hometown before officially bringing him onto his church planting team.  He knew that Timothy’s leadership potential would either be validated or brought into question based on the observations of the local believers that knew him best.[22]

An Important Issue

The affirmation of our calling through leaders who have gone before us and other believers with whom we are in consistent community is more important than we sometimes admit.  I have personally seen people ignore the warnings received from their leaders and other Christians in this area to their own detriment.  Perhaps pride hinders them from humbly receiving exhortation.  What I do know is that we need to pay attention to what the Holy Spirit is saying to us through the wider body of Christ about our desire to pastor and plant churches.  There is wisdom in a multitude of counselors.[23]  Specifically regarding the call to church planting, God’s people will see it if we have it.  Men Jesus has already used in that role will see it.  If they don’t see it, you’re probably not called, at least, not yet.

If you’re not called to church planting, than know that Jesus has something better for you that will glorify Him and bring satisfaction and purpose to your life if you let Him have His way!  Humble yourself before the Lord and He will lift you up at the proper time.  In the meantime, rest in His will for your life today!

 

Summary and Exhortation

In summary, it is absolutely imperative that a man discerns whether or not He is called by Jesus to be a church planter before pursuing the work church planting.  The called man will have the objective side of his call manifested through Christ-like character and a Holy Spirit given ability to teach God’s Word that has been demonstrated practically.  He will have an accompanying subjective side to his call that will be manifested as an intense inward desire for the mission of church planting born in him by the Holy Spirit.  His call will be confirmed by leaders who’ve gone before him, as well as through the wider affirmation of the local church of which he is a part.  If these aspects are in your life, you may be called to plant a church.  If they aren’t in your life, I would wait for the Lord to give you more clarity and direction.
